In May of 2014 I photographed a couple here in Lyons, Colorado – Mayana and Alex. They are two really cool people. I remember meeting Chantelle and her boyfriend Jed at the wedding. Chantelle is Alex’s sister. She seemed like the kind of person I’d be friends with. Crazy colored hair, super offbeat…you know my type. I don’t remember the details, but we must have hit it off somehow because we became friends on Facebook and I just thought…”one day this chick will get married and I want to be her photographer.” Chances seemed slim though. She lives in the far off land of the Pacific Northwest and alas I’m stuck here in Colorado. However, she and Jed got engaged and lucky me I was one of the first awesome people she hired. This made the wedding extra special because I’d LONGED to photograph it in all its non-existance up until she got engaged. Then I was hired and I knew I’d not only get to be there for all its offbeat weirdness, but I’d get to head up to Seattle, AND…and…I’d get to see Mayana and Alex again.
All of those things are what made this wedding feel like coming home after a long journey. I can’t lie. This wedding season has been a tough one on me. Not because of clients (y’all are the bestest), but pregnancy is a rough journey. Pre-partum depression is REAL. This wedding just made me feel all the good feels about weddings and the kinds of people I get to work with. It reminded me of all the things I LOVE about this job. Plus it didn’t hurt that it was rainbow themed, with rainbow glitter shoes and more dogs than I’ve ever seen at a wedding in my life. If you know me, you know that rainbows and dogs are among my top reasons for existing.
This wedding is more than just pretty things that I love, it’s about Chantelle and Jed, who have been together a long time and are one of those couples who are just so comfortable together that you’re immediately at ease around them. It also makes being a photographer an easy gig. They love to laugh and being around people this happy is infectious. Plus the way Jed and his mom laugh together just makes me laugh looking back at the photos. Chantelle’s dog also cracked me up. She just wanted to be inside that rainbow dress all day long!
Enjoy one of my favorite weddings of the year. I’m so thankful I got to go all the way to Seattle on a quick weekend trip to be there. Please take me to Shangri-La on the Green anytime for your foresty, offbeat wedding photography needs. I’m all over that.
