This blog post with Mary’s Denver portraits originally posted 9/26/14, but through years of growth and change it was a bit lost in the archives, and the photos were no longer displaying with the actual blog post story. Today I’m bringing these photos back!
A couple months ago I put out a call on the Book of Face asking around for anyone who was offbeat, tattooed, had weird jobs, was in a rock band, was super nerdy, loved cosplay, etc. just so I could do tattoo portraits or other offbeat portraits. As a photographer I often get hired to photograph amazing weddings, but I don’t get much control over what I want to photograph so this was going to be such a fun project to just document some really amazing people.
I’m so thankful that Mary volunteered to let me take tattoo portraits and tell her story. We had the most FANTASTIC time shooting, I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed so much during a shoot. You probably had to be there to understand our double chin tattoo ideas, so I’ll save that invention for another time. Meanwhile here’s some stories Mary has decided to share with us! Thank you so much for allowing me to document your tattoos and being so willing to just put it all out there!
“I worked for 10 years as an office manager, HR manager and event planner. I was laid off a couple years ago and decided I didn’t want another corporate job. Luckily the owner of a little locally owned boutique was looking for some help, so I’ve been there for almost three years.”
Her Favorite Tattoo
“My favorite tattoo? That’s a hard one. They’re all special to me in different ways. I love my mermaid. She’s art nouveau style based on Mucha’s art. She’s lovely to me and her softer color scheme makes me happy visually.”
The mermaid tattoo on her arm is totally wicked, but I also love the owl and phoenix on her legs too! We covered up her tattoos for a couple cosplay photos too. Cosplay is just basically a term for people who like to wear costumes and dress up as a character. This is something Mary would probably wear to a comic con. Any guesses as to the character? She’s Black Cat from the Spiderman comic books.
Cosplay is such a funny term to me. My friends and I grew up wearing costumes to movie premieres and spending the entire week of Halloween dressing up at school. You can never have too many costumes. It wasn’t until recently I realized that somewhere in the last 10 years people came up with a term for weirdos like us.
Mary and I also bonded over a mutual love of Doctor Who and I’m glad she threw in the Tardis dress to wear during her photos. We were laughing so hard at this point during the shoot. We were also trying to figure out a good way to photograph her Octopus tattoo. Apparently there are no really good poses for under arm tattoos, so you know the typical muscle pose had to work.
Best Moment of Life So Far
(what a cheesy question to ask right? I love happy things though).
“I think the best moment of my life was completing my first full marathon. It’s only in the last 4.5 years that I’ve found my inner drive and really challenged myself. Crossing that finish line was a nice reward to a lot of hard work.”
Tell Us a Short Story
“I’m the only child of a single mother, so I had a non-traditional raising. My mother is big on never being embarrassed to be yourself. She encouraged my active imagination and extroverted behavior. I have no problem with public speaking and I was very active in drama in high school and college. I’m also comfortable letting my nerd flag fly high. I’ve been making costumes and attending scifi conventions since I was 14. Those are my people. I love the complete acceptance nerds give each other. It makes my heart happy.”
